Sandustry Language Settings: Change Language
Last verified: 2026-08-15
Sandustry supports 23 languages, and the language you play in is controlled by the game's own language setting — changing the Steam client's language is a separate switch that does not automatically follow. As of August 15, 2026, the Steam store table lists all 23 languages with interface and subtitle support, and English is the only row that also includes Full Audio. This page covers the Sandustry language settings from three angles: what the 23 rows mean, how to switch, and what to do when a change does not stick.
Supported languages (verified August 15, 2026)
The Sandustry language settings menu draws from the 23 store-listed rows below. English carries Interface, Full Audio, and Subtitles — the only language row with a Full Audio check mark. The remaining 22 languages each carry Interface and Subtitles, with no Full Audio mark:
- French
- Italian
- German
- Spanish - Spain
- Czech
- Hungarian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Polish
- Portuguese - Brazil
- Russian
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
- Turkish
- Ukrainian
- Danish
- Dutch
- Finnish
- Norwegian
- Portuguese - Portugal
- Spanish - Latin America
- Swedish
That is 23 rows in total, matching the store page's "23 supported languages" label. Spread out, the list covers most of Steam's major markets: Western Europe (French, Italian, German, both Spanishes, both Portugueses, Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish), Central and Eastern Europe (Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian), and East Asia (Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese). Language availability is a build fact and can grow during Early Access, so recheck the store table after major updates. One historical note for context: demo-era footage from a Traditional Chinese creator was explicitly titled around the demo having no Chinese — the Early Access table now lists both Simplified and Traditional Chinese, so Chinese localization arrived with the current build. If you are still on the free demo, expect a shorter language list than the one above; the demo predates the localization push.
What the three columns actually mean
Steam's language table has three columns, and reading them correctly saves real disappointment:
- Interface — menus, buttons, tooltips, and building descriptions are translated.
- Full Audio — spoken voice exists in that language. Only English has this mark, which is why the Sandustry language settings change text everywhere but voices never switch.
- Subtitles — spoken or narrative text is transcribed in your language.
For 22 of the 23 languages, then, expect complete text localization with English audio underneath. The table also answers the common pre-purchase question — whether the game is playable end-to-end in a given language: Interface plus Subtitles means every menu and text line is covered, and no row on the store listing shows partial coverage. If a store row ever gains a Full Audio mark during Early Access, the Sandustry language settings will reflect it the same way — the in-game selector follows this table.
Change the language in game
Sandustry keeps its own language control, and the Sandustry language settings are what actually decide what you read. Steam's support documentation is explicit that a third-party game's language setting can be independent from the Steam client language, so look inside the game first:
- Launch Sandustry and open the settings from the main menu.
- Find the language selector and choose one of the 23 supported languages.
- Confirm the change; if the text does not switch immediately, fully exit the game and relaunch it.
The selector is not a one-way door: you can play a first factory in your native language and switch back to English at any time — English being the only row with Full Audio, it is also the only way to hear the voiced track.
The Steam client language is a different switch
Changing Steam's language changes the Steam interface — store, library, community — and Valve's own games. It proves nothing about what Sandustry displays, and it does not touch the Sandustry language settings. Steam's own support article gives the client-side flow:
- Open the Steam menu in the top-left of the client and go to Settings (Preferences on macOS).
- Open the Interface tab.
- Pick your language from the dropdown and confirm with OK.
- Restart Steam when prompted so the change takes effect.
If Steam is in your language but Sandustry is not, that is expected behavior — use the Sandustry language settings instead of concluding your language is unsupported. The independence runs the other way too: setting the game to Japanese does not translate Steam's store page, and Steam's dropdown cannot add a language the game itself does not ship.
Sandustry language settings not sticking? Fixes
Work the list in order — most language problems are one restart away from solved.
- Steam's text changed but the game did not — the two switches are independent. Use the game's own setting, then restart the game. Do not infer the language is unsupported from the Steam UI alone.
- Only some of the text switched — finish the full exit-and-relaunch cycle first. If mixed languages persist after a clean restart, record which screens stayed in the old language and report that list.
- A store-listed language is missing in game — record your game build, platform, whether you expected interface or subtitle text, and take a screenshot; report it through the official localization route below.
- Text is clipped or glyphs are missing — first separate the two faults: clipped text means the translation exists but does not fit its button, while missing glyphs mean the font cannot draw the characters. Note the exact string, the language, your resolution and UI scale, and whether the issue survives a restart, then report it.
- Language reset after an update — record the previous and current build numbers, reselect your language, and report the regression if it keeps happening.
- A "translation mod" promises a new language — that is unofficial community content, not a supported language row. Treat it like any other mod and follow the safety checklist on the mods page; a fan translation never appears inside the Sandustry language settings as an official option.
Report a localization problem
The official escalation route is the pinned "Report Localization or Text Issues Here" topic on the Steam discussions hub — the same hub that pins the FAQ, bug/crash, save-file, and official-wiki topics. A report the team can act on includes every field below:
- your game build and platform,
- the language you selected in the Sandustry language settings,
- the exact string, copied character-for-character,
- whether it is interface or subtitle text,
- your resolution and UI scale,
- a screenshot, plus whether a restart changes anything.
If an entire language row is missing rather than one wrong string, say so explicitly — that is a different fault from a typo. Keep the report factual: string, language, build, evidence — the Early Access FAQ says the developers actively want bug reports and player feedback, and the pinned topic exists for exactly this class of problem. Check for a game update before filing, too: localization fixes can ship with any patch, so a report written against an old build may solve itself. For live help writing the report, the official Discord is the right next stop.
Get the Sandustry language settings right once — in-game selector first, Steam client second, official report route for anything broken — and you should never have to think about them again.
FAQ
How many languages does Sandustry support?
23, according to the Steam store table as of August 15, 2026. All 23 carry interface and subtitle support; English is the only row that also lists full audio.
Does Sandustry have Chinese?
Yes. The Early Access store table lists Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese with interface and subtitles. Demo-era footage noted the demo had no Chinese, so Chinese localization arrived with the Early Access build.
I changed Steam's language but Sandustry stayed in English — why?
The Steam client language and a third-party game's own language setting are independent switches. Change Sandustry's language in the game's own settings, then restart the game; do not treat the Steam UI language as proof of what the game supports.
Does Sandustry have voice audio in my language?
The Steam language table marks Full Audio only for English. The other 22 languages are listed with interface and subtitle support, so expect text localization rather than dubbed audio.
Why are voices still in English after I switch language?
Because English is the only row with a Full Audio check mark on the Steam language table as of August 15, 2026. Switching language localizes interface and subtitle text; spoken audio stays in English for the other 22 languages.
Where do I report a Sandustry translation error?
In the pinned Report Localization or Text Issues Here topic on the official Steam discussions hub. Include your game build, platform, language, the exact string, interface versus subtitle context, resolution/UI scale, and a screenshot.
