The Sandustry demo is free and still available. Install it from its own Steam page (app 3490390, released January 31, 2025, about 500 MB) or play the older HTML5 build in a browser on itch.io. At our last check the Sandustry demo held an "Overwhelmingly Positive" summary — 97% of 1,344 user reviews, with the recent-30-days slice at 95% of 107.

Install the demo from Steam

  1. Open the Sandustry Demo store page — the main Sandustry store page links it as "Download PC Demo".
  2. Click Install Demo. It is a separate free listing, so no purchase is required.
  3. Launch it like any Steam game. The demo needs about 500 MB and matches the full game's minimum specs: 64-bit Windows 10, 4 GB of RAM, a GTX 550 Ti / HD 7750 class GPU, DirectX 11, SSD recommended.

Because the Sandustry demo is its own app ID, it sits in your Steam library as a separate entry with its own files and saves. Installing the paid game later never overwrites the demo, and removing the demo never touches the paid game.

What the Sandustry demo includes

The Sandustry demo teaches the full core loop on one hand-built map: dig Sand, soak it with Water into Wet Sand, shake out Gold, and deal with the leftover Slag. The tutorial walks the first minutes by hand — dig terrain, switch to the grabber, drop sand into water, shake the wet sand, and feed the gold to a collector — then the research tree opens: shakers first (built diagonally so wet sand lands on them), then conveyor belts and launchers, then filters, guns, and a flamethrower. Fluxite pays for permanent tool upgrades along the way.

Below the surface sit ancient ruins, artifact puzzles, and a lava layer; dig deep enough and the game tells you the demo is over, though you can keep building as long as you like. Creators needed several hours to exhaust it, and launch coverage noted it topping Steam's "Trending Free" charts in February 2025 — unusually generous for a free slice.

Demo vs. the Early Access version

The Sandustry demo is a snapshot from January 2025. The paid Early Access release (August 13, 2026) opens with the same core elements but is far larger: creators given review copies describe a map roughly 15 times bigger, a factory-tier mission system, more tools, more technology tiers, and reworked artifact hunts. The two are separate store listings, and neither page promises that demo saves carry over — plan on starting fresh.

The demo is also frozen in time. The developer told itch.io commenters he is fully focused on the full game, so the demo would likely see no separate updates. Creators close to the community add a second, protective reason: the Sandustry demo grew a huge modding scene, and any official patch would have broken that community work overnight.

How the demo was received

The Sandustry demo arrived on January 31, 2025 and, by creator accounts, was originally a Next Fest-style preview meant to gather feedback before a quick Early Access run. Instead it topped Steam's "Trending Free" charts within days, passed 100,000 wishlists over the following year, and helped land the game a publisher — Hooded Horse, of Manor Lords fame. The review counts tell the same story: 97% positive across 1,344 reviews at capture time, with players routinely reporting dozens of hours in what is technically a trial. If you want to understand why the full game's launch went the way it did, the Sandustry demo reception is most of the explanation.

The videos embedded on this page come from that period: a beginner's tips walkthrough and a full no-commentary playthrough, both recorded against the free build. They remain accurate for the demo itself, and the opening minutes still match the paid game's tutorial almost beat for beat.

Mods and custom maps

Because the demo shipped as a minified JavaScript build, its modding scene is entirely community-made: a mod loader called Fluxloader, custom maps, and overhaul mods distributed through the game's Discord. Those mods only fit the demo. The Early Access version instead ships with official modding support and Steam Workshop integration, and the store description explicitly invites custom maps and total overhauls. See the mods page and the custom maps page for the current picture, and the beginner guide once you move to the full game.

Known issues with the browser build

The itch.io comments are consistent about three problems: a black screen on launch in some Chrome and Firefox setups, loads that stall partway, and saves disappearing after cookies are cleared. There is no official fix list for the browser build. If you hit any of these, install the Steam demo instead — same core game, far more reliable.

Demo-era quirks worth knowing

The Sandustry demo has a few famous rough edges that the full game later fixed, and knowing them saves real frustration:

  • Water is finite. The demo shipped without a realistic way to automate water production, so veteran players resorted to workarounds — the infamous "rocket dupe" among them — to keep late-demo factories wet. Modded maps later added infinite water sources, which creators describe as a glorious era for the Sandustry demo scene.
  • Conveyor belts are slow. itch.io comments and demo videos both complain about belt speed; plan short drops and let gravity do the work where you can.
  • Flowers spread. An early demo hotfix (February 2025, the eighth) was dedicated to restoring what the developer called botanical order — unattended seeds root, grow, and clog machinery.
  • Manual shaking gets disabled. Once shakers exist, the game turns hand-shaking off to prevent accidental refining — a toggle in the options brings it back.

None of these are bugs in the current sense — they are the Sandustry demo's age showing. The Early Access build addresses most of them, which is worth remembering if a demo-era video contradicts what the paid game does.

Common Sandustry demo misconceptions

  • "The demo is the current game." It is not — the Sandustry demo predates Early Access by more than a year, and systems like water automation were added or reworked after it froze.
  • "It is a timed trial." No — the Sandustry demo is a permanent free listing, not a weekend trial; you keep it in your library.
  • "My demo factory will import into the full game." No carry-over is promised on either store page, and the builds differ enough that it would not make sense.
  • "A frozen demo means an abandoned game." The opposite: updates stopped on the demo precisely because the paid game absorbed all development effort — a trade the launch results seem to have vindicated.

After the demo: your next steps

If the Sandustry demo clicks for you, the natural move is the Steam version of Early Access — or the same build through PC Game Pass — followed by our beginner guide for the opening hour. And if the demo is all you play, its mod scene alone can keep that one map fresh far longer than a January 2025 trial has any right to be. Either way, the free build remains the best zero-cost answer to the question every new player asks first: do these physics feel as good as they look?

FAQ

Is the Sandustry demo free?

Yes. The demo is a free standalone listing on Steam (app 3490390) and a free HTML5 build on itch.io. No purchase or account beyond a Steam login is needed.

Does demo progress carry over to the full game?

Neither store page promises save carry-over, and the demo and Early Access version are separate listings on separate builds. Plan on starting fresh if you buy the game.

How big is the Sandustry demo?

About 500 MB of storage, with the same modest minimum specs as the full game: 64-bit Windows 10, 4 GB RAM, and a GTX 550 Ti or Radeon HD 7750 class GPU.

Can you mod the Sandustry demo?

Yes — the demo has a community mod loader (Fluxloader) and a custom map scene on the game's Discord. Those mods target the demo only; the Early Access version uses official modding tools and Steam Workshop instead.

Is the Sandustry demo still being updated?

No separate updates are planned. The developer has said he is 100% focused on the full game, which is now available in Early Access.

Is the Sandustry demo still worth playing after launch?

Yes, if you want a zero-cost trial. The Sandustry demo remains a faithful sample of the core physics and the gold-shaking loop, and its hand-built map takes several hours to exhaust — just remember it is a January 2025 snapshot, not the current game.
